OnePointOne Indoor Agriculture
Project Type
Work Experience/Mechanical Engineering
Date
2019-2020
I began my job at OnePointOne as a systems technician, building and maintaining structures and fluidics systems for prototype indoor agriculture facilities.
After 6 months, I became the project owner for a horizontal flood and drain grow system built into pallet racking. I designed and over saw the build of the fluidics and structures of this project, as well as assisting with some electrical work. I collaborated with plant scientists to derive requirements and define design specifications for the system, and with engineers to integrate controls, telemetry, environmental systems, and LED lighting for plants.
In the design, I modeled the fluidics mathematically and the structures in CAD. After an initial small scale prototype used to validate the fluidics models, we built 3 full scale functional prototype with 18 stacked levels of grow space. We used this system to fulfill orders of basil to three star Michelin chef David Kinch for over a year at his restaurant Mentone. We were able to control the system to such a degree as to match authentic Italian environmental conditions. “...the wonderful Genovese Basil they have been growing for us at Mentone for our Pesto, essentially our Spirit Animal here at Mentone” -David Kinch.
The pallet racking flood and drain system consisted of 13 vertically stacked layers (not shown, only single layers are shown in the images). We built a total of 3 prototypes of these systems.
